This past week found me watching several videos of senior citizens still actively pursuing their sports. Thought I'd add the links to this post as a motivational tool for my "Senior Citizens" Group aka Sounebu Tokutokusei. (^^) Enjoy and reignite the spirit in your souls! Osu!

Spring is around the corner!
Cherry Blossom Season is coming soon in Japan. (^^)
I do miss the parties underneath the Cherry Trees. But like anything done in moderation all have a good time, out of control partying causes grief all around. April is the time in Japan when cases of Acute Alcohol Poisoning sky rockets. Why? It is the season for graduation, entry into employment, acceptance into colleges. People naturally celebrate. Colleges are infamous for welcoming parties where alcohol is literally forced upon freshmen. AND freshmen are not even legal drinking age! I think the responsibility goes to everyone involved. Why a sad thing to read about a death from Acute Alcohol poisoning at a time when a new start in their lives was to begin.
I'm not quite sure if there is a mistaken image of being able to hold your drink being synonymous with practicing martial arts. Both in my Judo and Karate careers alcohol was there. Much more in Japan. When I reflect upon it, it was a foolish thing. Worse yet the Senpai/Kohai connection raises its ugly head. I am not against drinking. Only against excessive drinking. At Gasshukus the pecking order dictated everything, including drinking. Refuse a Senpai? Goodness No! The good news I hear is that it is changing in Japan through all levels of society. (^^)
While pretty, the cherry blossoms also project an image of sadness.as its life is short. The suicide pilots in World War 2 referred to themselves as Douki no Sakura. I want my students to be like the Matsu, Pine tree, roots firmly embedded and strong against even a hurricane. Only dedicated training allows you to achieve that.
Having fun with my Pokemons (^^)
It is like having a bunch of grandchildren. Gahahahaa. I can't expect any from my daughter for a while I think! She's too deep into her anime world, producing stories and publishing with her artist partner. (^ ^)
Introduction to Kumite Basics.
The kids really enjoy kumite. Next week they start on the body contact. I think they already know that contact is not something that tickles! (^^)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (often known simply as Seneca; ca. 4 BC – 65 AD) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and in one work humorist, of the Silver Age of Latin literature. He was tutor and later advisor to emperor Nero. While he was later forced to commit suicide for alleged complicity in the Pisonian conspiracy to assassinate Nero, the last of the Julio-Claudian emperors, he may have been innocent.[1][2] His father was Seneca the Elder and his elder brother was Gallio.
I came across the above video today. I want to share it with all my students and friends. Will be required watching for my Pokemons for sure (^^). The human spirit is awesome.
Former NCIS colleague and fellow Karate-ka Gary paid a surprise visit to Yokohama Dojo this month. Shihandai William is in Chicago for a month as part of his Doctor's internship. In good timing Nagaie Shidoin has transferred back to Yokohama. The kids will be delighted!

GREAT NEWS FROM YOKOHAMA! (^^)
Just received word that Nagaie Shidoin, "Mr Rescue", is being transferred back to Yokohama in April! Great news for Yokohama Dojo as Shihandai William will be in US for medical studies for a while.
As far as I know there aren't any international conferences scheduled for Yokohama that would keep Nagaie san uber busy! I am so happy for Yokohama. Nagaie Shidoin is a a top notch leader and the kids love him as well.
Now need to make sure Shihandai stops in Hawaii on his way home from his training. (^^)
This news certainly brightened up my day (night actually).

一年 One year
It has been one year since I found myself watching the news of the tsunami at Shinbashi Station and then spending the night at the evacuation center. That afternoon I was on my way to Kodokan in Hakusan when the earthquake hit. I can still recall the tremors and watching the big ferris wheel at Korakuen swaying as well the buildings. After that it was a continuous broadcasts of the horrors of the tsunami and earthquake in Tohoku.
My prayers go out to the deceased and survivors of the tsunami and earthquake.
Makiki and Yokohama Dojos will continue to do what we can to assist in the continuing recovery of Tohoku.

Gomennasai m( - -)m
Hmmmm. Reading up on Parkinson's Disease.......(- -;). Will be limiting my blogging activities for some time. Not to worry, I'm not the one with Parkinson's、it's my mom. However, I do seem to be dropping things more frequently......
My trip to Japan will probably be delayed....Sorry Yokohama Dojo.
Please excuse me if I am late in responding....
Aloha and have a good Day, y'all.
If can, can. No can, no can. Dat's life.

Makiki Dojo
Today was an interesting session. The temple was having a funeral service right above the practice hall, so we had a "silent" practice. Shhhhhhhhh..... No Kiais, no shouting, no cadence.....(^^) So the practice was very low key. More review on kihon waza. We also did a reaction drill for back grabs. The drill is to gewt the kids to naturally move automatically. Right shoulder, right turn; Left shoulder left turn. Automatically cover the head with both hands for protection. This positions the forearms in a good position to execute an arm bar. The kids did not do arms bars but just learned the positioning. (^^)
I also introduced the kids to what "full contact entailed". Have four kids signed up for kumite sessions. After today's demo? We'll see.
A short lecture on the importance of concentration and giving 110 % effort along with the importance of "tsukuri" set-up phase of blocks

Martial Arts in Hawaii
Did you know that Hawaii has its own brand of martial arts? Here are some examples.
Kajukenbo
Lua
Mitose Lineage Kosho Ryu Kenp
There are many schools here on Oahu representing a wide range of karate systems from Japan and Okinawa. Many cannot be found on the Yellow Pages (^^) as well.
With large Korean, Chinese, and Filipino communities in Hawaii there are also many Tae Kwon do, Kung Fu and Escrima instructors. In what is rapidly becoming a mini Korea town in the Keeaumoku area there are three TKD Dojangs that I know of. Nearby elementary school cafetaerias change into practice halls for a variety of martial arts. (^^)
If you ever visit Hawaii. Take time to visit and watch some of the martial arts offered on the island.
Quote for the weekend.
We can only help make our lives and our world more peaceful, when we ourselves feel peace. Peace already exists within each of us, if we only allow ourselves to feel its comfort. Peace of mind begins when we stop thinking about how far we have to go, or how hard the road has been, and just let ourselves feel peace. Peace of mind gives us the strength to keep trying and keep walking along the path that we KNOW is right for our lives. – Robert Alan

Little by Little (^^)
Makiki Dojo 1-28-2012
Had a good session tonight with my Pokemons. (^^) They're getting used to the new style of maikng a circle vice lining up. It appears they like the circle more than the lines. (^^) I really like the idea that we all can see each others faces.
Yachiyo and I then demonstrated one of the applications for the Jodan Uke. Punching and Blocking in the air is not enough to get the children to understand the technique. Yakusoku kumite is a vital part of training. Block and counters are important as well.
Once in a while it does the soul good to take a hike into nature. Listening to the wind, the chirping of birds, the gurgling of the creek, the smell of wild orchids. The air is so fresh in the forest.

円で集合。The circle formation.不思議な事に列より素直に並ぶ。
An interesting thing, the kids get in formation quicker and better than the rows! (^^)
Today we focused on Jodan Uke and its application so that the kids can get a better understanding of the block. But more imortant it was a good way to reinforce the teaching of Jita Kyoei! Together they improve! It has to be a cooperative effort. One slacks off then both do not improve. The attacker has to attack properly with the correct technique so that the blocker can block properly. This is when one of my rare thunderbolts came down on the Pokemons! (^^)
