  1. Sitting tonight watching your oyo of kata. I am working on pinan sono ni not the opening movements but thinking about the Tsuru-ashi dachi, and the comment of Wilder, Sensei, "that when your hands touch in kata think about a hold, or grap or, pressing, or seizing" as the hands touch. I can see a yoko geri and back fist "sticking an attacker from the rear, and then, would like to see an arm bar......also thinking I see some head contact training in the kata oyo....might this be worked in the idea of head contact for kihon training also....

Ideas not well though out...just speaking or writing aloud tonight...

  2. (^^)Gotta start somewhere! The fun part of deciphering kata is the choice you have of either using a single move, such as back fist with kick or a sequence of moves.
Try imagining this if you start from movement 1.
    1. Vs a Head punch, block with upper block and counter with an upper cut.
    2. Follow through with hammer fist to the neck while hanging on the opponent's arm which you blocked initially.
3, The backfist changes to a neck grab since the hand is already there from the hammer fist (#2). The side kick converts to a knee kick since you have to raise the knee for a side kick anyways or kansetu geri.
    4. Still hanging on the opponent's hand do the shuto strike as in the Kata which will then be a throw.
    Tadaaaa! Fun isn't it.
The mountain block in Seiunchin or Seiyunchin has so many applications it boggles the mind.

I hope I can actually apply the oyous in jiyu kumite. My thinking is very simple. In real life, you do not get attacked as you wish, it is up to you to be able to ultilize the "idea" in the kata movement in free form. Pre-arranged bunkai has its limitations. Sigh the road is long!
