Sanchin Shime in Mechanicville's Dojo

After watching Sanchin Shime by Higaonna Sensei on Han Sensei at the Miyagi Festival in 2010, I feel awkward in posting my “checking” of Scott-san sanchin kata durning our last kyu shinsa. I am sure that Scott’s Sanchin would be better under Higaonna Sensei, watchful eye… Found this YouTube very interesting on tandan...( I also could not get the youtube to post)

  1. Tony,
My second attempt for this comment. (^^)
Thanks for uploading the vids. Defintitely have to get the proper sanchin stance for the groin kick!
Try using bicyle inner tubes wrapped around both ankles and biceps to get a good fell for shime. I think they sell the ankle ones at Sports Authority.

  2. PS,
Those mats in the background look like the ones I'm hoping to get. How long are those, it looks fairly large.

  4. I am still trying to make my dachi with stand that groin kick. If my tension in both my abduction and adduction are correct, I should be able to take that kick...in no small part, I also need to let my mental me, believe my physical me....(^^).

  5. (^^)You have two actually three options.
    1. Make the width narrower so you can flex the knees to bring your thighs closer.
    2. Go to the gym and make yoself some world class body builder thighs.
    3. Get out of the way of the kick! Want doesn't land doesn't hurt.
This opens up a can of worms! As usual. Fufufu.
From a pragmatic stance, we will never stand and let someone kick us or punch us. We should already be in our safety zones to react to any danger. Neither will we stand still as in the kata.
Sanchin is a training tool. Now the key in using the sanchin lies in the abilty to focus the power into movement. As I said some time back a "moving" sanchin. The ability to harness the power while in natural movemeny.
One thing I learned from the Uechi style of Sanchin is that you can get the same results as Goju Sanchin even in quick movements.
For us "newbies" we need to concentrate on balance and focus on the tanden. Let me throw out this question. Why do we repeatedly slap down on the shoulders? To dissipate the over focus on the upper body? Perhaps Chris Wilder's book has a chapter on it.
Practice, practice. practice (^^) Never ending.
